The church in the village of Tijarafe dates back to the 16th century and is a declared heritage site (BIC).
In 1515, a small hermitage was already built on its site, and in 1571 there was a baptistery there. In 1686, work began on the current building with a Latin cross floor plan – a nave and two side chapels – in the Moorish style.
The altarpiece of the church is considered unique in the Canary Islands. It was restored in 1993. The Virgen de La Candelaria is not only the patron saint of the municipality of Tijarafe but also of the whole Canary archipelago.
