The rare lotus has been declared an endangered species by the World Conservation Union IUCN. The Pico de Fuego is endemic to La Palma, occurring naturally only on the isla bonita. In order to preserve and expand the population, the Cabildo Insular has created protection zones: in two places in the pine forest of the Parque Natural de Las Nieves, in the area of Marcos y Cordero and on the way to Roque de los Muchachos coming from the east side. Especially rabbits, rats, goats, sheep, arruis, forest fires but also human influence threaten the red butterfly flower.
